7 Signs a Tree Needs to Be Removed
How to tell when a tree has gone from healthy to hazard, what is fixable with trimming, and when it is time to take it down.
Not every problem tree has to come down. Sometimes a good trim fixes it. But some trees are telling you they are done, and ignoring that is how a tree ends up on a roof. Here is what to watch for.
1. Big dead branches up top
A few dead twigs are normal. Large dead limbs high in the canopy are not, they drop without warning, especially in a storm. If a good chunk of the crown is bare while the rest leafs out, the tree is in decline.
2. A lean that showed up recently
Trees grow at angles all the time and that is fine. A tree that suddenly started leaning, with soil heaving or cracking on one side of the base, is a different story. That usually means the roots are failing, common here after a wet stretch loosens our clay soil.
3. Cracks or a hollow trunk
Vertical cracks, deep splits, or a soft, hollow-sounding trunk mean the structure is compromised. A hollow tree can stand for years or fail in the next windstorm, and it is hard to predict which.
4. Mushrooms or fungus at the base
Mushrooms growing out of the trunk or roots are a sign of internal rot. The tree might look fine up top while the base is quietly giving out.
5. Roots lifting or near the foundation
Roots buckling your driveway are a nuisance. Roots growing into your foundation or sewer line are a real problem, and sometimes removal is the only fix.
6. It is too close to the house or power lines
A healthy tree planted in the wrong spot can still be a hazard. If it is dropping limbs on the roof every storm or growing into the lines, trimming buys time but removal may be the real answer.
7. Storm damage that broke the structure
After a Houston storm, a tree with a split trunk or a major broken leader usually will not recover its strength. It can keep dropping limbs for years. Often it is safer and cheaper to remove it than to keep patching it.
Trim or remove?
A lot of these are judgment calls, and the honest answer is sometimes “this one just needs a good trim.” We will tell you straight, if a removal is not necessary, we will say so. If it is, we take it down safely and clean up after.
